On June 26, 2013 the Supreme Court made two significant decisions: The court returned Proposition 8 to the lower courts. It appears that in about a month, gay and lesbian marriages will once again be legal in the State of California (# 13 in the country!). We celebrate this decision and anticipate the joy of the lesbian and gay families who can now solemnize their vows of commitment and be granted the full rights and responsibilities of marriage in California. In a broader decision, the Justices overturned the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which had discriminated against legally married gay and lesbian people by denying them the federal marriage benefits. Justice!! Now we have lots more work to do, but today and this Pride Weekend will be a time of pure celebration!
Just as we celebrate justice for one community, we must grieve an unjust decision by the Supreme Court to gut the Voting Rights Act. In an era of widespread voter suppression efforts by factions in many states, it is vital that we double our efforts to ensure that every American, regardless of race, ethnicity, creed, or political philosophy has the right to freely vote. This is the essence of our democracy and voter suppression efforts are a disgrace! MORE WORK TO DO!
